Ira Boyd Smith, a cherished family man and devout Christian, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in Newburgh, Indiana, at the age of 74. Born on September 3, 1951, in Perry, Kentucky, to the late Hazel Feltner and Eugene Smith, Ira's life was a testament to his strong faith, love for his family, and dedication to his community.
Ira's journey through life was marked by deep connections and loving relationships. He was a devoted husband to his wife of over 30 years, Terri Smith, and a loving father to Lindsey Crow and Stephen Smith. His role as a father-in-law to Holly Smith and Chad Crow was embraced with warmth and kindness. Ira's life was further enriched by the joy of his grandchildren, Madison, Robert, Madelyn, Conner and Emily Taylor; Elise, Lauren, and TJ Crow; Ryann Spalding; and Xavier Smith, who will carry his legacy forward.
Ira proudly served in The United States Army during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, Ira served his community as a dedicated postal worker for the US Postal Service up until retirement. His commitment to service didn't stop in the professional world but extended beyond into his spiritual community at The Refuge Christian Church in Chandler, Indiana. There, he was involved in various capacities, from the music ministry to maintenance, to evangelism. Ira's love for preaching and sharing the gospel was evident to all who knew him.
Music and faith were the cornerstones of Ira's life. He found solace and joy in reading his Bible and playing southern gospel music on his guitar. He loved the encouragement he received from one of his favorite verses, Psalm 91:1. Ira had a great love for people but also had a profound love for animals, especially for his cherished dog, Fisher, a beagle-basset mix who was adored by Ira for many years.
Ira's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many family members and friends whose lives he touched with his gentle spirit and generous heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Eugene, his first wife, Nancy Smith, his sister, Annette Pettus and his children, Amanda Taylor and Matthew Spalding. Yet, his memory will live on in the stories shared, the music played, and the faith he nurtured in those around him.
As we bid farewell to Ira, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by unwavering faith, boundless love, and a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire for generations to come. Ira Boyd Smith will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will forever remain a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
