Irene Elizabeth Krothe, 89, of Shickshinny, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Meadows Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas, PA.
Born December 3, 1935 in Huntington Mills, she was the daughter of the late John and Miltona (White) Pennington.
She attended Huntington Mills High School and obtained her Cosmetology Degree from the Jamel School of Cosmetology. She earned her Associate Degree in Commercial Art from LCCC.
Irene was last employed in the Microfilm Department at the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant. She was also employed at the Boston Store and Boscov's, where she managed the Girl Scout Department, winning an award from the Girl Scouts of America.
Living a full and active life, Irene served many years on the Northwest Area School Board, West Side Area Vocational-Technical Board, and the Luzerne Intermediate Unit Board, where she served several terms as Treasurer. She was a member of the Shickshinny United Methodist Church.
Irene loved playing bingo, attending yard sales and watching movies. She also enjoyed vacationing at Long Beach Island on the Jersey shore.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Jay Allen Krothe; and two brothers: Ted and Edward Pennington.
Surviving are her two daughters: Lori Lee Sorber and her husband, Andrew, of Hunlock Creek, and Bonnie Sue Krothe of Shickshinny; her grandson, Andrew Sorber, Jr.; her brother-in-law, Dale Krothe of Berwick; three sisters-in-law: Donna Krothe Goobic of Lake Pinecrest, Kay Krothe Wolfe and her husband, Mark, of Shickshinny, and Joyce Krothe of Bloomington, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At the request of the deceased, services will be private.
Interment will be in Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., Shickshinny.
