Irene Sawyer Wallace, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Brookdale Northwest in Greensboro. She was born on August 23, 1927 in Chowan County, NC to the late Miles Gordon Sawyer and Nora Catherine Harris Sawyer, and was married to the late Melvin Harold Wallace.

 Irene retired from Lowes Foods in Wilkesboro after several years of service. After retiring she moved back to Burlington and worked for Sawyer Exterminating until the age of 90. She was a member of The Gathering Church. Irene enjoyed going on bus trips with her friends, an avid walker, enjoyed dancing, was known as the Jitter Bug Queen, enjoyed spending time at her beach house at Surfside. But most of all she loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 She is survived by her daughters, Donna Holder-Mashburn and husband Herb, Delayne Sherrill and husband Chip, and Debbie Whittington; grandchildren, Stephen Holder, Marian S. Gurley and husband Dwayne, Allycen S. Garner and husband Ashley, Sarah Whittington and Ben Whittington; great grandchildren, Hayden Wallace Whittington, Anna Leith Garner, Ashley Garner, Jr., Camden Tate Whittington, Nolen West Whittington, Cohen Harris Whittington, Julia Frances Gurley, and Parks Henry Gurley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

 Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Wallace; parents, Miles and Catherine Sawyer; a son, Rickey David Wallace; five brothers and four sisters.

 The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, March 8, 2024 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Shields with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:30am to 12:45pm Friday prior to the service.
