Iris Hipps Ensley, a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully departed this world on January 9, 2025, at Autumn Care of Waynesville, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and unforgettable memories. Born on November 28, 1941, in Haywood County, North Carolina, Iris devoted her life to the care of her family and home, embracing the role of caregiver with a selflessness that was both profound and inspiring.
A skilled baker, Iris was adored in her community for her delightful creations, particularly her celebrated coconut cake, which earned her the blue ribbon award for overall baking at the Haywood County Fair. She often made her famous lemon bread as gifts for friends and caregivers. Iris was also an outstanding cook, and lovingly tended to her garden and canned the harvest alongside her husband, Bruce.
Iris is survived by her loving sons, Joseph "Kelly" Ensley (Katy) and L. Kevin Ensley (Alice), along with her beloved sister, Sandra Hipps Mathews (Harold). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Megan Shelton (Owen), Kalam Ensley, Laura Greene (Michael), Jared Ensley (Kalei), Seth Ensley (Ricki), and Joseph Ensley. Her heart swells with pride for her great-grandsons, Reuben Greene and Ellis Ensley, who were the light of her life.
Iris was a devout Christian whose faith was an important part of her everyday life. She was a faithful member of Glory Tabernacle Church in Asheville, and she continued her spiritual growth through Bible Study which she held at her home.
Though Iris has left this earthly realm, she is preceded in death by her parents, John "Bill" Handy Hipps and Waitsel Mackey Hipps, her devoted husband, Bruce Douglas Ensley, who passed away in November 2022; two precious grandchildren, April and Levi Ensley, and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Greene.
Iris's visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home in Canton from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, followed by her funeral service starting at 12:00 PM. Pastor Ronnie Pittman will be officiating. Interment will follow at Old Bon-A-Venture Cemetery in Clyde.
As we gather to honor and remember Iris's remarkable life, we celebrate not just her talents but the love she generously shared with all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and the memories they hold dear.
The care of Mrs. Ensley has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
