Irma Carol Uhl DeVary, 88, of Charlestown, Indiana, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025. She was born on September 7, 1937, in New Albany, Indiana, to Herman Cornelius and Barbara Geneva Fessel Uhl. She preferred to be called Carol by those who knew and loved her.
Carol was married to the late Ernest L. DeVary on September 25, 1971, and together they shared many loving years. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Kevin Phillips and the late Greg Phillips. Family was always at the center of her life, and she especially cherished her role as grandmother to her grandchildren.
Carol was a proud graduate of Charlestown High School, Class of 1956, and an active supporter of the CHS Alumni. Carol was also a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Charlestown. She worked at ICI, Ford Motor Company, and Big Blue.
Carol gave of herself freely — to her family, her church, and her community. Her kindness and laughter brought people together, and her gentle spirit will be remembered always. Carol also dedicated her time to helping organize funeral dinners at St. Michael’s, serving her community with compassion and care.
Carol found joy in making dumplings for the Septemberfest, attending plays at Derby Dinner Playhouse, and traveling with her L.I.F.T. group, cherishing the friendships and memories she made along the way, including her lifelong friend since 8th grade, Betty Lou Cole.
Carol also loved attending Thunder Over Louisville each year. She was an avid I.U. basketball fan and enjoyed playing bingo with friends and family. In her younger years, she even surprised many with her adventurous spirit by participating in powder puff demolition derbies during the 1960s.
Carol is survived by her son, Kevin Phillips; her grandchildren, Zach, Katelyn, and Ethan Phillips; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Cornelius and Barbara Geneva Fessel Uhl; her husband, Ernest L. DeVary; her ex-husband, Roger Phillips; her son, Greg Phillips; and her sisters, Patricia Martin, Janet Anderson, and Evelyn Goode.
Visitation will be held at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, Indiana, on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with services at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Friday, December 19, 2025, at 11:30 am.
