Fagan's Funeral HomeIsaac W. Houghtaling, affectionately known as Ike by those who knew him best, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, in Elmira, NY, at the venerable age of 97. Born on November 15, 1927, in Hornell, NY, the son of Isaac and Blanche (Elster) Houghtaling, Ike lived a life marked by dedication, humor, and service, touching the lives of many in his community. Ike's early years were spent in the halls of Hornell High School, where he received an education that would serve as the foundation for his future endeavors. His journey took a patriotic turn as he answered the call of duty, serving his country as an Army veteran during World War II and the Korean Conflict, an experience that shaped him and instilled values he carried throughout his life.
Returning home, Ike began work as a delivery man for Hopkins Dairy in Bath, NY, a role that saw him become a familiar and welcome face to many in the area. His hard work and friendly demeanor made him more than just a delivery man; he became part of the daily fabric of the community he served. Ike also worked at the Bath V.A.M.C. with the same dedication and integrity he brought to his military service.
Family was the cornerstone of Ike's life. He is survived by his loving sons, Kevin I. (Carol) Houghtaling of Elmira, NY, and Gary (Cheryl) Houghtaling of Virginia Beach, VA. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Aaron (Hallie) Houghtaling, Steve and Josh Miller, Danny Ritter, and Cory, Steve and Greg Kinney, many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Ike also leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Florence Houghtaling; brothers-in-law, Roger (Diana) Parulski and David Parulski, both of Bath, NY. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Zorenia, his son Aaron Houghtaling, brothers, Edward, Duane and Donald, his brother-in-law Chester Parulski and sister-in-law, Ruth Parulski.
Those who knew Ike will remember him as the life of the party, a man whose sense of humor was as rich as his friendships. He was also the one you could count on to fix anything, a true handyman whose skills were surpassed only by his willingness to help others.
Ike's commitment to his community was evident through his long-standing involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, where he took on the role of Scout Master, guiding young men with a gentle firmness and a ready smile. His love for his community further shone through his active membership with the Charles E. Wescott American Legion Post 173 in Bath, where he shared camaraderie and support with fellow veterans.
As we bid farewell to Isaac W. Houghtaling, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, marked by laughter, love, and an enduring spirit of community. His was a life that truly made a difference, and his memory will continue to inspire and bring smiles to the faces of those who remember him. Rest in peace, Ike; your legacy will live on in the hearts of those you've left behind.
