Ismael F. Garcia passed away at his home, on January 13th, 2025, at 90 years old, with his beloved wife, Angelina, by his side.
Ismael, known as Mike to family and close friends, was born in Mercedes, Texas; he never hesitated to mention how proud he was to be a born and raised Texan. He came to
Aurora, Illinois when he was 18 years old looking for work. After several odd jobs, he became a long-term employee of Western Electric, for 34 years, retiring in 1990. He filled his retirement years with numerous trips to Texas to visit friends and family, spending many hours in his prized garden, and becoming a general handyman where no job was too difficult to complete. He also owned a restaurant for several years which became a popular breakfast place.
Mike served in the Army National Guard from 1954 to 1957, becoming a heavy weapons infantryman. He was honorably discharged in March of 1957.
Mike was a founding member of the Aurora Latin American Club, an accomplishment he was greatly proud of. Founded in the mid 1960's, the club is still serving the Latin community today. Serving as the club's president several times throughout the years, Mike consistently made sure everyone was welcomed at the club and that the community enjoyed themselves at the numerous events that were hosted when he was an active member, including dances and picnics. Anyone who knew him knew he was a kind and caring man who always treated everyone with respect.
Mike met his wife Angelina, Angie as he called her, at a dance in Joliet, Illinois, fitting because of how much they loved to dance together throughout the years. Over time, Mike and Angie became parents to four children - Debbie, Lydia, Michele and Michael - and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this past summer. He loved coaching little league baseball while his son, Michael, was on various teams, and he always had hugs for his daughters, giving great advice. He was always willing to help a neighbor, family or friend when asked.
Mike is survived by his wife Angie, his daughters Debbie Garcia-Schramel (Arnie) and Michele Smith (Ron), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Santana, Lidia Barrera, and Diana Garcia; brothers Jose, Arturo, Roy, Rene, and Hector; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Adela and Guadalupe Garcia; his daughter, Lydia Oleson; son, Michael Garcia; his sister, Lillie, and brother, Tony.
The family would like to thank AccentCare Hospice, who provided in-home care that gave Mike the ability to stay in the house he built and shared many wonderful memories with his wife and children. The nurses, aides, and staff were compassionate and caring and were welcomed help to Angie; she is very grateful for their wonderful service.
The family held a private burial service, and would like to thank Healy Chapel, who made sure every detail was taken care of and are grateful for their kindness through this difficult time. Mike's family plans to have a celebration of life for family and friends at a later date.
Mike Garcia believed in living life to the fullest, offering a helping hand whenever possible, and never missing an opportunity to go fishing. He is loved dearly and will be greatly missed.
