Jack Young, age 90, of Corbin, Kentucky passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Lillie Sue Bruner Young; two children, John Franklin Young & his wife Caroline of Athens, TN, and Jennifer Lynn Young & her husband Greg Strause of Louisville, KY; two grandchildren, Katherine Anne Young and James Walter Young; plus, a host of other family and friends to cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pleasant Hoskins (P.H.) Young & Beatrice Lillian Bowling Young and one brother, William Jennings Young.
Jack was a dedicated civil engineer and proud veteran. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force before beginning a long and respected career with the Kentucky Department of Transportation, where he worked for more than 25 years.
Jack met Lillie, the love of his life, in 1962 at the Kentucky Highway Department office in Manchester. He was working on bridges in Whitley County on what would become I75 and Lillie was a UK student working part time at the highway department keeping statistics on all the trucks in the district. They began dating and got married the next year during UK's Spring Break.
5 years later they had a son, John, and two years after that, a daughter, Jennifer.
In 1967 he was offered a job at KY Prestressed Concrete in Lexington and worked with the company for 10 years. He was instrumental in the design and construction of Rupp Arena and Commonwealth stadium. In 1978 he felt the call to return to southeast Kentucky and accepted the position of Assistant District Engineer in the same District 11 building where he met Lillie. He retired from that job in 2000.
Jack stayed active in retirement by working in the yard. He took great pride in a well manicured lawn, evenly trimmed shrubbery and well stocked bird feeders. Jack had a soft spot for wildlife and, besides the birds, he made sure that the squirrels, opossums, raccoons, groundhogs, skunks and deer were well taken care of.
Jack had a brilliant mind and enjoyed crossword puzzles and sudoku. He kept up with current events and was a huge UK basketball fan. He loved spending time with family and enjoyed telling stories and eating home cooked meals.
Jack will be remembered for his commitment to his work, his service to his country, and the quiet strength and integrity that defined his life. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched along the way.
