Jacob Leslie McCargo

December 18, 1929 - January 5, 2024

Elk Grove, California - Jacob Leslie McCargo "Les", 94, husband of the late Alice (Albertini) McCargo, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family and loved ones on Friday, January 5, 2024. Born on December 18, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late John and Bessie McCargo. Les graduated from Roseville High School in 1947 and then attended Heald's Engineering College in San Francisco, graduating in 1949. He then served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict. Following his service he worked for the State of California as a civil engineer for 41 years, retiring in 1992 as Chief Deputy Director of State Parks. Les was influential in bringing the California Railroad Museum to Sacramento and sat on the board of the California State Parks Foundation for many years. In his spare time Les was an active volunteer at Senior Gleaners and participated in numerous local square dance groups with his wife of 62 years. Les was a member of several RV clubs and loved gardening, traveling, and projects around the house. He was an incredibly influential and loving member of his family and community. Les is survived by his son Steven McCargo (Diane) and daughter Joan McCargo, his granddaughters Candice Wackman (Howard) and Morgan Schroeder (Philipp), and his great-grandchildren Alexander Wackman and Luna Schroeder. In addition to his wife Alice, he was proceeded in death by his sister Verna.

Les was a fun guy and I loved Alice as well. Alice and I drove down to Cabo San Lucas in my 1971 VW camper and had a fabulous time. We visited all of the artists we could find. Alice and Les shared many vacations with Bob Neves and me, frequently down at Santa Cruz because Les could always arrange campsites for us. Les built a fabulous professional Crap Table for our Caroline Wenzel School Monte Carlo Fundraiser at Portuguese Hall and Bob had charge of the bar. That table was preserved and used by many other groups for their Monte Carlos. Alice was an artist in jewelry as well as many other mediums. Les loved a good joke and they were both soft spoken and their walls were covered in artwork where they were very hospitable to their many friends. I'm sure they are very happy together again. It was a long wait for Alice, but the wait was so worth it!!!
