Jacob Newberry Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 26, 2024.
Jacob Evan Newberry, beloved son and brother, passed away at the age of 24 in Denton, Texas. He was born in The Woodlands, Texas to Johnathan and Jennifer Newberry and moved to Allen, Texas at the age of 6 months. Jacob graduated from Allen High School in 2018, before studying Psychology at the University of North Texas.
A 2022 graduate of UNT, Jacob applied his Psychology degree to his work with Denton County MHMR. He served as a Residential Therapist for individuals with developmental disabilities for 3 years while a student. After graduation he transferred to the Assertive Community Treatment team. He quickly became the team leader and served in that role for the past 2 years.
As a boy growing up in Allen, Texas, Jacob participated in Cub Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America at age 14. A member of the Scouting honor society, Order of the Arrow, Jacob served as Vice Chief of Service and ultimately Chapter Chief. He worked at Camp James Ray for 3 summers and was the senior youth leader for the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) program after serving in multiple NYLT capacities over 3 years. While a student at UNT, Jacob was a member of multiple on-campus clubs serving in multiple roles including club secretary and club president.
Jacob lived and breathed music, movies, and running. He had an unmatched recollection of song and movie details by favorite artists and directors and enjoyed long discussions regarding their subtleties and importance to him. His fervor for running saw him on the Allen High School Cross Country team, including multiple wins at community races near and far. He completed multiple half-marathons and 10Ks as far away as Olympic National Park, Washington that included a win in his age group.
Jacob was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Garland Smith and Carol Smith.
He is survived by John Newberry of Fort Worth, Texas, Jennifer Smith Newberry of Carrollton, Texas, brother Jackson Newberry of Carrollton, Texas, and paternal grandparents Greg and Cindi Newberry of Schertz, Texas, along with numerous family, friends and coworkers spread across North Texas.

Jacob was one of the most diligent, organized, and professional students that I have ever met. His leadership was exceptional and he was a fabulous student org president. He will be dearly missed by our found family.

Jacob often came to TINNER. He was a deep thinker and wasn't scared to share what he thought about life. We loved getting to know him more deeply outside of the class and seeing a very different side of him, one that loved music and obscure movies. I remember before he graduated the gift that he give our family, a collection of some of his favorite movies that he loved and wanted to share with us. We will cherish these times we spent with him and will always remember him super fondly.

Jacob had a great passion for music. He was always sharing some of the music that he wrote with us and if I remember correctly he even played a song for his final project in Spanish class. He loved making music, which is something with which we often connected. The picture below is when he found out that I had a senior project in which I wrote five songs Super excited. I only had it on tape though, so he took it home, digitized it and made a CD for me. I´ll always remember that he did that and took the time to allow me to listen to something I created over two decades ago.
