Jacquelyn B. Smith

Jacquelyn "Jacquie" B. Smith, 100, of Lenexa, KS and formerly of Ottawa, KS passed away peacefully Monday, October 3, 2022 at her daughter's home in Lenexa, KS. She was born May 11, 1922 in Centerville, KS the daughter of Harry and Bernice (Boydston) Quaintance. She graduated from Parker High School, Parker, KS. Jacquelyn majored in Botany at Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS before World War II.
Jacquie was united in marriage to James William "J.W., Smitty" Smith on January 31, 1943 in Centerville, KS. They shared over sixty-two years of marriage before the death of her husband on August 14, 2005.
Jacquie and Smitty lived in Fort Pierce, Florida where he was stationed with the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, they moved back "home" to Centerville, KS where Jacquie was a homemaker. In 1954, they moved to Garnett, KS where Jacquie worked at Dr. White's/Dr. Dougherty's office and later worked for the Anderson County Extension office. In 1965, the family moved to Ottawa, KS. Jacquie worked at Ottawa University as an administrative assistant for twenty years before retiring in 1987. From 1995 to 2005, Jacquie provided care in their home for her beloved husband who had been diagnosed with Parkinson's years earlier.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, KS; United Methodist Women; Sequel Club; Four Seasons Garden Club and Ottawa University Women's Club. She also volunteered at Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Ottawa, KS. Jacquie enjoyed gardening and canning. She was a seamstress and taught her daughters to sew. She was a fabulous cook and will be remembered for her sensational pies. Jacquie dearly loved her family and had the privilege of many fun times with her grandchildren who all have such beautiful memories of her and her extravagant love for them. She also was blessed with special times with her great grandchildren and great-great grandchild.
It is difficult to sum up the essence of Jacquie's 100 year life in a few facts. She will be remembered for her beautiful affirming smile and the sparkle in her eyes. She was a kind, hard-working, forgiving, devoted and loving wife, mother and friend to many. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Don Quaintance; and two sisters, Marilyn Eastwood and Beverly Knapp.
Surviving family includes, three daughters, Sharon McFarland and husband, Doug of Lenexa, KS, Pam Smith of Plainfield, IL and Jodi Smith of Ottawa, KS; a sister, Sue Dumcun of Paola, KS; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
To celebrate Jacquie's life, a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church, 203 E. 4th Street, Ottawa, KS 66067. The family will receive friends 10 a.m. Saturday before the service, at the church. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Centerville Cemetery, Centerville, KS.
