With heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss, we remember and celebrate the life of Jamal Hassan Latham, who departed this world far too soon on June 22, 2025, at the age of 33.
Born on January 19, 1992, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jamal was the beloved son of Duane Boatwright and Gray Latham and was raised in a family that nurtured his vibrant spirit, sharp wit, and quiet strength.
Jamal's life, though brief in years, was rich in presence. He was the kind of person whose energy made an imprint, soft but undeniable. A calm soul with a warm smile, Jamal carried himself with a gentle confidence that made others feel seen, heard, and safe. Whether in moments of joy or quiet reflection, his presence had a way of making people feel at home.
He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and later earned his high school diploma from Saint Gabriel School. Though life threw him its share of challenges, Jamal met them with resilience and a desire to grow-never content to remain still when he knew he was called to more.
In 2020, with a deep sense of purpose and vision, Jamal started his own cleaning business, naming it Jacques Cousteau-a tribute not only to adventure and precision, but also to the depths of life that he was determined to explore. The birth of his daughter, Journey Latham, shifted his entire world. From the moment he held her, everything changed. She became his north star, the reason behind every early morning and late night, the heartbeat behind every dream.
Wanting to provide a future full of possibility, Jamal returned to school and earned his CDL license, becoming a long-distance driver. He took great pride in his work, but even more pride in the role he cherished most: father. To Journey, he gave his all-his laughter, his lessons, his time. She was his light, and his legacy. May she always know how deeply she was loved and how much of her father lives on within her.
He treated others-with kindness, gratitude, and a quiet grace. He lived in alignment with the values he believed in, walking humbly and living fully.
He is survived by his daughter Journey Latham, who was and will always be the center of his heart; his mother Duane Boatwright, father Gary Latham, and bonus father Ahmad; his sister Nikyta Gray brother Gary Latham; nieces and nephews: Daniel, Nahgee, Zion, Danea, Dandrea, Desiree, and Haleemah; great-nephew and niece: Azirr and Nova; and a loving host of extended family members and dear friends who were like family. Each of them carries a piece of Jamal with them-his stories, his laughter, and his unwavering loyalty.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Brunetti and Richard Boatwright, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms.
Jamal's life reminds us that it is not the number of years we are given, but the depth of love we offer and the lives we touch that truly define our time here. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his memory will continue to bring light, especially to those who knew his heart.
We honor Jamal not just in mourning, but in celebration of the father he was, the son and brother he became, and the friend who brought comfort and laughter. He will be remembered always, missed deeply, and loved forever.
