Jamel Datré Smith Sr.
February 17, 1975 - December 18, 2024
Jamel Datré Smith Sr., age 49, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on December 18, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion. Born on February 17, 1975, to Belysa and James Smith, Jamel's journey was marked by his deep commitment to family, faith, and the people he touched throughout his life.
Jamel was the proud father of two sons, Jamel Smith Jr. and Jaiden Smith, who were his greatest joys and his truest purpose. A devoted and selfless father, he poured his energy into raising his boys, guiding them with love, wisdom, and an unwavering belief in their potential. His role as a father extended beyond his own sons, as he served as a mentor to many young men through his involvement with his sons' sports teams.
A man of incredible faith, Jamel centered his life on his devotion to Jesus Christ. A proud member of a discipleship group, he supported others in their spiritual journeys and led by example, embodying kindness, integrity, and a spirit of service.
Jamel graduated from Morgan State University with a Bachelor of Science in strategic communications and carried his passion for growth into his career. As Vice President of Client and Candidate Care at First Advantage, he was known for his incredible work ethic, sharp mind, and charismatic presence. Beyond his professional achievements, Jamel was a lifelong learner, always seeking new ways to grow and inspire others.
Jamel lived a vibrant and active life, sharing his love for fitness and healthy living with friends and family. He was a protector to his brothers, Jarreth and Rashad Smith, a loving uncle to Carlo and Cassius Smith, and a loyal friend who brightened every room he entered. His quick wit, infectious humor, and warm soul made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
Jamel is lovingly remembered by his two sons, Jamel Jr. and Jaiden, and their mother, Sabrena Smith. Though their marriage ended, Jamel and Sabrena maintained a strong friendship and an extraordinary co-parenting bond. Together, they prioritized their children's happiness and well-being, showing unwavering love and support as a team. Their partnership in raising their boys was a testament to mutual respect, kindness, and shared dedication to family.
Jamel was predeceased by his parents, Belysa and James Smith. His mother, Belysa was a guiding light both in life and afterlife and her guiding words, Stronger than the Struggle, are words that the entire Smith family continuously draw strength from. Jamel leaves behind his younger twin brothers, Rashad and Jarreth, with whom he shared a special bond, Smith Boys. He was not only their big brother but also a mentor, protector, and constant source of support. Jamel's love for them was resolute, and their connection was filled with laughter, respect, and countless cherished memories.
Jamel is also survived by his loving sister-in-law, Samantha Smith, who held a special place in his heart. Their bond was built on mutual respect, laughter, and shared family moments. Jamel cherished Samantha as more than just family-she was a true friend and source of support throughout his life. Jamel also leaves behind his nephews, Carlo and Cassius, who he fiercely loved and protected. Many loving aunts, uncles, and friends are also left behind. They will undoubtedly treasure his memory forever.
Jamel's love extended to his loyal dog, Brolly, who brought him endless joy and companionship. Brolly was more than a pet; he was a cherished member of the family, and Jamel's bond with him reflected his kind and nurturing spirit.
A celebration of Jamel's life will be held at Eline Funeral Home in Reisterstown, Maryland. A viewing will take place on December 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on December 28 at 11:00am.
Jamel's unwavering love for his family, his steadfast faith, and his charismatic spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, and purpose. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In loving memory of Jamel Sr, whose presence touched the lives of all who knew him. While words cannot express the depth of our loss, we take comfort in the cherished memories he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Jaiden and Jamel's fund, supporting their future and honoring Jamel's lasting legacy of love and care.
At just 13 and 10 years old, they are facing an unimaginable challenge, but with the love and generosity of our community, we aim to provide them with the financial stability and resources they need to pursue their education, dreams, and future opportunities.
Every contribution will help ensure that Jamel Jr. and Jaiden feel the continued love and support of those who care about them, just as their father would have wanted. Together, we can make a lasting impact on their journey forward.

Jamel was known for his powerful throws on the mat, but when I was a sophmore and Jamel was a senior at Kubasaki High School, he suffered a back injury during an open tournament. After some down time, Jamel returned to practice with a much more technical approach to the mat. Not wanting to risk another injury. He took this method all the way to the Far East Tournament where at the finals he graced us with a beautiful 5 point through. This was so much sweeter since Jamel even participating in the rest of the season was up in the air. Jamel will be missed. I attached a photo from my freshman year. I was so proud to be on the kubasaki wrestling team posing for the camera. Low and behold, Jamel is posted up behind me dripping with excellence.

Jamel was a force to be reckoned with on the football field and on the wresting mat. But he had a softer side to him as well. I remember howhe would make us laugh in Ms. Nelson's Spanish class. (when he wasnt out running around in a plastic suit to make weight for an upcoming event). Our loss, Heaven's gain.
