James Kenneth Adkins, Age 83, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on May 10, 2025.
James was born on September 22, 1941, to Molly & Ferriel Adkins in Regina KY and was the oldest of 12 children. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Leo "Peach" Ratliff and brothers Paul David Adkins, Lonnie Gene Ratliff, and Timothy "Boatman" Ratliff. He is survived by sisters Bonnie Dye, Janie/Sammie Adkins, Velvie Griffith, Phyllis Ratliff, Roy/Robin Ratliff, Connie Damron & Jill Sellards.
James enlisted into the Army and served in the Vietnam war before being wounded in battle and retired. He was a proud veteran who stayed active with the VFW throughout his life.
After his military service James ended up in Illinois where he would meet his future bride, Debbie. He worked at International Harvester before deciding to head west to attend college at Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado. James had two sons, Shawn & Leon with Debbie and graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. James and his family returned to Illinois and settled in Round lake beach welcoming three more children; Greg/Chad, J.J. and Cassie.
He went to work at the VA hospital as a painter and maintenance man, he also prepared tax returns out of his home office. James loved to fire up the barbecue, put on some bluegrass music and host cookouts with family and friends.
He represented a father figure to many and never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, his kindness, generosity and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
James was a hard worker but somehow found the time to attend his kids basketball games, volunteer for their time in the boy scouts, or pack up the family for holiday trips to CA, FL & KY. He also loved to travel back to Colorado, to visit old friends, camping horseback riding, teaching his kids to fish or sharing stories of his wilder days. Although his trips slowed down over the years, James found his happiness settling with his family in Lawrenceburg, KY where over the years he became a grandfather to 15 and great grandfather to 1. The love that he had for his wife of 48 years was an example to all those witnessed how sweet and loving they remained until the end of his life.
A celebration of life will be held at the family residence 1356 Versailles Road, Lawrenceburg on June 7th starting with military services at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for continued prayers and positive thoughts for his wife and family. Special thanks to the VA hospital, home health and hospice staff who did amazing jobs, throughout this peaceful and loving process.
Noon & Son Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with final care.
