James Craig Allen, AIA, was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago. After graduating from Niles Township High School, he earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University in 1964.
An accomplished architect and leader in his field, Jim began his career with Perkins & Will in Chicago, where he rose to become Chairman of the Board and served on the firm's Board of Directors. His work spanned the globe, shaping corporate, commercial, and educational projects across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Following his tenure at Perkins & Will, Jim founded the Chicago office of RTKL Associates, where he served as Senior Vice President before retiring in 2002. He later served on the Board of Directors of Walker Parking Consultants, including as Lead Independent Director and Vice Chairman.
Throughout his 40-year career, Jim was widely respected for his vision, professionalism, and dedication to design excellence. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and numerous professional organizations.
Beyond his professional life, Jim had a deep passion for his lake house in Michigan, where he enjoyed fishing, relaxing by the water, and spending time with friends and family. He was also an avid golfer and cherished his winters in Florida.
Jim is survived by his sons Robert (Amber) and Craig (Rosanne); his stepchildren Rick (Tricia) Warren and Tracy Crossman; his sister, Jane (Jay) Cope; as well as his 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Craig and Mary; his brother, William; and his daughter, Cindy McConnell. He will be remembered for his integrity, leadership, and the remarkable legacy he left in the world of architecture.
