PLAINFIELD - James "Jim" A. Bates, 65 passed away on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026 at Hartford Hospital after suffering a major stroke and other complications.

He was born on September 21, 1960 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late James E. And Marie (Langlois) Bates.

Jim was married to his late wife Elysia (Kohl) Bates on July 13, 2002.

Though his life was cut short, he embraced every moment and left this world without regret. Jim lived life exactly how he wanted and was always good for a laugh.

He worked as a subcontractor installing flooring for the Norwich Floor Covering Shop for over 30 years.

One of his favorite pastimes was building and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He enjoyed summer cookouts with his family and friends, hanging out poolside, and spending time with his inseparable dog companion Stone. He was an amazing father, Papa, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his two daughters; Michelle (Michael) Crandall; Amanda (Timothy) Bates-Thoma; and four grandchildren Noah and Ethan Crandall; Skylar and Baby Thoma; and many friends who have become family.

He was predeceased by his 3 sisters Lisa Watson, Mary Grills, and Jean Abram.

Family and friends are invited to visit the Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home, 595 Norwich Rd., Plainfield, CT for visitation on Sunday, January 25th from 11am to 2pm. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Music Lady in Moosup, CT.
