James Allen Benedict, 66, passed peacefully on January 31, 2026 due to complications from a long term illness.
He was born on November 11, 1959 in Warren, Ohio, to Martha & James Benedict.
After graduation from Niles McKinley High school in 1978, he attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a degree in Physical Therapy in 1982. James continued his education over time achieving a Master's degree followed by a PhD in Public Policy from Walden University in 2016. He retired as an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at Youngstown State University, after teaching for 16 years.
James was a positive influence in many people's lives. He was a mentor and passionate about helping students to reach their full potential.
James was a founding board member of the Midlothian Free Health Clinic. He was instrumental in bringing the clinic to Wick Avenue and building a partnership with First Presbyterian Church & YSU. He served the clinic as the Executive Director from 2018-2024. Within the free clinic, James Co-founded the Penguin Physical Therapy Program to educate physical therapy students and serve the community.
James was an avid runner and Ohio State Sports fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and doing yard work. Over the course of his life, he ran over 20 marathons in many states.
He was a devoted husband, father of three, and grandfather of five. He is survived by his beloved wife Michele, his children Bryan (Lisa), Brad (Grace), and Alex, his brothers Tim (Mary), Terri (Donna), and his grandchildren Ayla, Carter, Brooks, Maxine, and James.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 6th, 2:00-4:00 PM, at Lane Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held immediately following at 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorials or gifts may be made to the Midlothian Clinic (201 Wick Ave, Youngstown, OH 44503), Physical Therapy Alumni Scholarship (through the YSU Foundation Website). From the loving family of James Allen Benedict.
