James M. Bertan, 88, formerly of Millstone Township and Marco Island, Florida, departed this life on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at his daughter, Janel's, residence in Robbinsville, with his wife, Joyce, and daughter, Janel, by his side. His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey-a life filled with dedication, love, and cherished memories.
Born on August 25, 1937, in Jersey City, New Jersey, James embraced life with an adventurous spirit. He graduated from Snyder High School in Jersey City, shortly thereafter answering the call of duty by joining the United States Marine Corps, where he served with honor from 1955 until 1959, attaining the rank of Corporal. His commitment to service reflected the core principles he carried throughout his life: integrity, resilience, and duty.
In 1967, James made the momentous decision to relocate to Millstone Township, where he cultivated a horse farm, nurturing a profound love for horses and breeding award-winning Doberman Pinschers. His time immersed in the world of horse racing and dog shows fostered deep connections and friendships that enriched his life. James dedicated many years of his professional life to the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local #28, proudly serving the manufacturing industry until he retired in 1991.
A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, James cherished the moments spent with his family as well as the adventures he shared with his beloved wife, Joyce. Together for over 70 years, and married for 63, their marriage stands as a testament to their enduring love and partnership. In this time of remembrance, we celebrate James-a man whose spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
James is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Susan (Ochman) Bertan; and his daughter, Joy Bertan Guzik. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his devoted wife, Joyce A. (Lippoi) Bertan; his daughter, Janel Bertan, of Robbinsville; and his son, James, II, of Howell; along with numerous family members who held him dear.
A graveside service honoring James' life will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Princeton Memorial Park, located at 403 Gordon Road, Robbinsville, NJ. Military honors will be presented by the United States Marine Corps, reflecting a profound respect for his service and dedication to his country.
