James Rauch Brant, Jr., 83, of Cumberland, went home to his LORD and Savior on August 23, 2022, at UPMC-Western Maryland.
Born May 26, 1939, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James R. Brant, Sr. and Dorothy Bruce (Schade) Brant. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Charlene Shafer.
Jim was a graduate of Fort Hill High School and received his Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Allegany Community College. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the Air Police, providing security services.
Jim was retired from the State of Maryland, having been a DNR Officer for 19 years. He received multiple commendations including his assistance with the apprehension of a suspect that murdered two WV State Troopers in 1977. Jim later worked with his wife as real estate brokers at Smith Realty and served as President of the Cumberland Board of Realtors both in 1988 and 1989.
He was one of the founding members of the Solid Rock Independent Baptist Church and served as a Deacon. He loved the Lord. Jim and Nancy accepted the Lord together at the Union Grove Camp Meeting in 1960.
Jim was commended by the Grand Jury, he was a charter member of Cumberland Raiders Roller Hockey Club, and co-founder and past president of FOP Lodge 48. Jim belonged to the NRA and the Fort Hill Rifle & Pistol club and Cumberland Bow Club and was a police firearms instructor and a pistol expert.
In his spare time, Jim enjoyed hunting. He and his wife, Nancy, loved to travel, having visited Israel and Egypt with his church family, Alaska, Hawaii, and Cancun.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy; two children, Tana Durst and husband David, and Greg W. Brant; grandchildren, Greg, Garrett, and Sarah; and, great grandchildren Cameron, Keaton, and Sierra.
Friends will be received at Solid Rock Independent Baptist Church on Monday, from 10:30 AM until noon. The funeral service will follow at noon, with Pastor Tim Pratt, II, officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post #13, Veterans Honor Guard.
