James "J.R." Brown was born on May 6, 1933 in Hardin County, Tennessee, the son of the late William Greene and Linnie Bell Franks Brown.
On December 5, 1958, he was united in marriage to Betty Joyce Turnbow, who preceded her husband in death on May 12, 2016.
Mr. Brown honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan. He later worked as a timber contractor and logger for many years and retired from work in 2014 at 81 years old. J.R. was a member of Mt. Vinson Methodist Church for 57 years. He played and sang gospel music with many different groups. He had a program on the radio for many years, then he was on The Bluegrass Gospel Hour with Ruby Wyatt on Channel 18/32 for 30 years.
James "J.R." Brown departed this life on Monday, November 17, 2025 in Adamsville, Tennessee, at the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 11 days.
He is survived by his son, Robert Lynn Brown of Orange Park, Florida; daughter, Lana White (Eddie) of Adamsville, Tennessee and Bettina Milford (Roger) of Stantonville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Eric Brown, Brian Brown (Cindy), Natalie Aven (Bryan), Nicole Cotner (Wes), Camden Milford, and Colby Milford; and great grandchildren, Gabriel Brown, Jake Brown, Allen Brown, Presley Cotner, Bane Cotner, Finn Cotner, Everley Cotner, and Tilley Cotner.
In addition to his wife and parents, J.R. was preceded in death by his brothers, Millard Brown and Graford Brown; sisters, Bertha Stricklin, Julia Brown, Sallie Stricklin, Clemmie Brown, Carrie Stricklin, and Robbie Wolfe; grandchildren, Jennifer Brown and Christopher Brown; and daughter-in-law, Brenda Brown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Vinson Cemetery Fund.
