James Derek Brown

James Derek Brown, born on April 26, 1962, in Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 63 years old.

Derek had a fulfilling career as a sonographer, dedicating many years of service within the John Peter Smith Hospital system and various private practices. His colleagues and patients admired him for his caring and devoted nature, as he always took the time to ensure each patient felt valued and listened to.

A graduate of Ozark High School (1980), Derek was known for his outgoing personality and ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, anytime. He believed in the importance of lending a helping hand and was always eager to go out of his way for others. Derek had an impressive array of skills and was regarded as a man of many trades. His playful spirit shone through his love of corny jokes and his quick wit, bringing laughter to those around him.

Throughout the years, he enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, consistently engaged in numerous projects. A collector of random items in his later years, he was often equipped with what one might need, even if it took a bit of time to locate it. His passion for mechanical projects, particularly involving cars, showcased his meticulous and hands-on approach to life.

Derek's family was paramount in his life, and he proudly embraced his role as a devoted husband and father. He cherished his children, James Tadinger Brown and Baylie Alexis Kilian, who were the light of his life. His dedication extended beyond reason, as he never hesitated to stop his own tasks to assist his kids or anyone in need. He found joy in his grandchildren, Dawson Jones Kilian and Conrad James Kilian, always finding and sending things they would enjoy as he came across them. 

Derek is survived by his son, James Tadinger Brown; daughter, Baylie Alexis Kilian; son-in-law, Taran Joshua Kilian; grandsons, Dawson Jones Kilian and Conrad James Kilian; and sister, Shannon Burns and family. He is preceded in death by his mother, Nina Beth Gowing Brown, and father, James M. Brown.

A memorial service to celebrate Derek’s life will take place on February 20, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Emerald Hills Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Kennedale, Texas.

His memory will remain cherished by all who knew him, a testament to his kindness, humor, and unwavering commitment to others.
