James Vernon Burleigh, known affectionately as Papa, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones in Wichita, Kansas. Born on April 6, 1938, in the same vibrant city, James lived a life enriched by family, faith, and dedication to his profession.
James began his career as a draftsman at The Boeing Company, where he proudly worked for 45 years, contributing his expertise primarily on the ASME Drafting Standard Committe as well as Military Projects. He rose through the ranks and ultimately retired as a 2nd Level Manager, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and excellence.
Educated within the community he cherished, James graduated from the first graduating class of West High School in 1955, where he made his mark by lettering in Basketball and Baseball. He continued his educational pursuits at Wichita State University. On June 30, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Edna Burleigh, with whom he shared a life filled with love, joy, and raised four daughters: Sandra (and husband Scot Smith), Karen Kerr, Teresa Burleigh-Smith, and Dru Denham.
James was not only a devoted husband and father; he was a beloved grandfather, a role he embraced wholeheartedly since becoming a grandfather in 1982. His grandchildren—Brandon (and Eva Smith), Rachel (and Larry Thomas), Michele (and Ryan Eastep), Austin Smith (and Arianna Holland), Cole (and Briana Smith)—along with his great-grandchildren, including Jayden Ellison, Gage Eastep, Layla Denham, Bella Eastep and Camden Menzie, Loreli Denham, Aaron Crump, Gage Thomas, Connor Smith, Easton Thomas, Emma Smith and Easton Schwarz, Holden Gouldner, Bodie Smith, and twins Oliver and Greyson Smith, all lovingly referred to him as Papa. His passion for his family, caring for his grandchildren, and cheering on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Race Circuit were integral parts of his life.
James’s warmth was felt deeply by many. His sense of humor, characterized by jokes and witty comebacks, brought laughter and light to those around him. His smile and spirited personality made a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals. He was a man of faith, with a profound love for his church, Bethany United Methodist Church, where he cultivated a sense of community and belonging.
He is survived by his beloved wife Edna, his daughters and son-in-law, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit and values. James is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Gertrude Burleigh, his son-in-law Brad Smith, his sister Beverly Mann, his brother-in-law George Mann, his nephew Brett Mann, and his grandson Jacob Denham, as well as his great-grandchild Olivia Denham.
The memory of James Vernon Burleigh will forever be etched in the hearts of those he loved and who loved him. His life was a testament to family devotion, humor, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
