SAVANNAH - Mr. James Edward Butler, Jr., 81 husband of Mrs. Idonia Butler, passed away, Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Candler Hospital. James was born to the parents of Deacon James Edward Butler, Sr. and Lucille Decosta Butler on January 28, 1943, in Savannah, Georgia.
He is preceded in death by both parents, two sisters, Mary Butler Ward, and Mildred Butler.
James was a member of Liberty City Church of Christ for many years.
James attained his early education in the Savannah Chatham County School system. He was a graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School, Class of 1960. After graduation, he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1964 from Savannah State College (now University).
During his time at college, he met and married the love of his life, Idonia Mobley, the two were married in May 1965. In 1972, one son was born, James Edward Butler III.
Shortly after graduation, both moved to New York where he worked for the City of New York Health and Human Services as a Food and Health Inspector.
James worked as a Biological Technologist for the City of New York until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. They later relocated back to the Savannah area while serving in the Army.
James served during the Vietnam Era and served his country for over twenty years, retiring in 1984 with the Rank of Captain in the United States Army.
After his military discharge, he began working with Memorial Medical Center as a Laboratory Technician. He later began a career in the public schools of Chatham County where he taught students at Tompkins High School and Jenkins High School and retired in 2003. Shortly after retirement, he started teaching students at Hardeeville High school, SC where he remained until retiring in 2009. He was also employed by the City of Savannah as a Food Health Inspector.
He was deeply devoted to making a difference in the lives of those around him.
James will be deeply missed by all who knew him and especially by his family and many friends.
James leaves to cherish his memories; devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Idonia Mobley Butler of Savannah, GA, one son, James Edward Butler III of Buda, TX, Three grandchildren, Damario, Dymaris and Jizella Butler; two great grandsons, Matteo and Cario Butler, several sisters-in-laws; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins' other relatives, church family and friends.
