(Fred) James Frederick Cahoon passed away May 10, 2024, a few weeks before his 90th birthday. He was born June 4, 1934, at the family farm, Boston Twp., Ionia Co. Mi., to Maurice and Jessie (Hatch) Cahoon. When he was 5 years old his father passed away. His mother continued to operate the farm that had been in the family since 1836.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ida in 1922, brother Robert in 1927, a sister Anna in 1989 and brother Larry in 2012.
Fred married Jacqueline Lawrence May 11, 1957. They purchased the family farm and continued its operation. He passed away the day before their 67th anniversary.
He attended North Bell rural school and Saranac High School. He served with the National Guard, Co. H, Ionia, Mi. They enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. He was a member of the Ionia Co. Genealogical First Family Society.
Fred worked for McInerneys in Grand Rapids, then Fisher Body in Lansing, retiring after 36 1/2 years employment.
He was very active in Free Masonry serving in Belding, Ionia, Clarksville and Grand Rapids. In 2023 the Order of the Purple Cross was conferred upon Fred which is the highest honor conferred by the York Rite College. This honor is conferred to those members who have distinguished themselves by service to humanity. He also received the York Rite Cross of Honor.
Fred served as: Master of Lowell Lodge #90, was past Commander of Ionia Commandery, was Past TIM of a Council, was the High Priest of Hooker Chapter 38, a member of the York Rite Cross of Honor Priority #22 and York Rite College #10.
Fred is survived by; his wife Jackie, sister-in-law Marilyn Cahoon, brothers and sister-in-law Ralph and Alice Lawrence, Larry Lawrence, Gary Lawrence. Nephews: Joe (Mary Jane) Everett, Steve (Linda) Everett, Tim (Nancy) Cahoon, Brian (Wendy) Cahoon, and Jim (Robin) Cahoon, Great-nephews & nieces, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at South Boston Bible Church, Kyser Rd., Lowell, MI. at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior, Pastor Cory Malone officiating. Interment South Boston Cemetery. A luncheon to follow at the Community Building. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Co. Animal Shelter. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Saranac.
