James Carter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Riley - Branson Funeral Service & Crematory on Dec. 19, 2025.
James Elmer Carter, known to many as Jim Carter, was born on January 31, 1945, in Independence, MO, USA. His wit, courage, love, and generosity touched many lives throughout his years. James passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025.

James was a man of great character who lived a life filled with joy and purpose. He was known for his generous spirit and loving heart, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a witty joke to brighten someone's day. His courage was evident not only in his personal life but also in his professional career as a Sales Manager at Emory Air Freight. He was a dedicated employee as a Hearing Aid Technician with special friend, Chad Huffman, until his retirement in 2014.
In his younger years, James's talent in football earned him a full-ride scholarship to William Jewell University in Missouri, an achievement he was always proud of. After moving from Independence, MO, to Indianapolis, IN, James eventually retired in Charlotte, NC in 2014.
His love for golf, books, football, and baseball were often the heart of family gatherings. Throughout his life, family was what mattered most to James.

He is survived by his loving spouse, Gaye Carter, to whom he was married on September 2, 2000. He is also survived by his children: Joshua Carter, Jason Carter, John Sutton (step-son), and Christa Sutton (step-daughter), and his sister, Reba Peavler. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren: McKenzie Carter, Eli Carter, Addie Carter, Ashton Carter, Gavin Carter, Claudia Sutton, Fallon Sutton, Niko Sutton, and Edison Sutton.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Alice Carter, and his daughter, Jennifer Carter.

A Celebration of Jim's life will be Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM at O'Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46227. Burial of his ashes will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

James's legacy of love, generosity, and courage will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate to have known him.

The Nasuti family is thinking of my brother-in-law Jim and their Uncle.
What we all liked the most was Jim´s sense of dry humor. He would lead the way in not being too serious. What we also liked was Jim´s care and loving ways to my sister, Gaye. They found each other and were able to spend 20 years together. He will be missed.
