James Neal Chandler, lovingly known as "Pepaw," passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025. Born and raised on Sand Mountain, Alabama on April 6, 1936, Neal was one of nine siblings, seven boys and two girls. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was marked by love, service, and kindness.
After graduating from high school, Neal joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his country. While stationed in San Francisco, he met the love of his life, Helen J. Chandler. Their enduring love story was the foundation of a family that brought Neal immense pride and joy. After his service in the Navy, Neal began a career with Unisys Corporation (formerly Burroughs) which spanned 33 years and several states. After his retirement, he and Helen eventually settled in Jackson, MS. They were members of First Baptist Church, Byram, MS.
Pepaw was the beloved father of five children, grandfather to 10, and great-grandfather to 17. His family and numerous friends cherished his humor, wisdom, and gentle spirit. In his later years, he was affectionately called "Pepaw" by all who knew him, a testament to the warmth and love he radiated.
Neal was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen, his daughter Lorrie Ann, his six brothers, and one sister. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his sister Villa Hammond of Gulfport, MS; his children: Tony and wife Mary Ann of Pace, FL; Greg and wife Julie of Greenfield Center, NY; Chris and wife Jill of Georgetown, TX; Lynette Fountain and husband Chris of Utica, MS; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous extended family and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
Pepaw's life was a shining example of devotion to family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered. A celebration of Neal's life will be held later this year with burial to take place in Alabama. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to The MIND Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Office of Development, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39216 or online at https://www.umc.edu/Development/Give-Now.html.
Rest in peace, Pepaw. Your love and legacy will live on in all of us.
