James Codding Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Daniels Chapel of the Roses Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. - Santa Rosa on Jan. 30, 2026.
James (Jim) William Codding Jr., 70, was born in Santa Rosa in 1955 and a lifelong resident of Sonoma County.

After retiring from his long career in construction and carpentry, Jim devoted his time to what he loved most: family, friends, travel and the outdoors. He took his children fishing in Alaska and to Giants games in the summer, his wife on photographic safari in Africa and river cruises in Europe, joined friends at shooting competitions across California and hunting in Mexico and Argentina. He was a volunteer with Sonoma County Search & Rescue, and proudly introduced his young grandson to fishing.

When he wasn't traveling, Jim could be found at his grill, hosting legendary gatherings. His steak and lobster 4th of July parties were not to be missed! His fish fry gatherings with the catch he brought home from Alaska were enjoyed by many

Above all else, Jim was a devoted family man and friend. He was a generous, genuine, and dependable father, husband, son, brother, and grandfather. Always just a phone call away, Jim prioritized being present and helpful to those he loved. His warmth regularly demonstrated that love and kindness are not finite. He always had a joke or two to share and never seemed to run out of them.

Jim passed away peacefully at home in Santa Rosa on 1/21/2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Diana, children Sara, Rachael, Michael and Kate and their spouses, his twin sister Nancy, brother Peter, step-sister Nancy, and two grandchildren, Samuel and Adalynn. He is preceded in death by his parents James, Sr., and Jone Codding.

The family welcomes donations to the Sonoma County Search and Rescue in Jim's name.

I worked with Jim on construction at The Geysers when times were slow in the 80s. Super nice guy and genuine straight shooter. One of the best of the Coddings, IMHO. Rest in peace, Jimbo. Way too soon.
