James Donald "Don" Combs

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James 'Don" Combs, who died peacefully at the age of 86. A true Kentucky legend, James will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to the world of horse racing, most notably his triumph in the 1970 Kentucky Derby with Dust Commander.
Born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, James cultivated a lifelong passion for horses from a young age. He honed his skills and knowledge through dedication and hard work, eventually becoming a highly respected and successful horse trainer. His career was marked by numerous achievements, but the victory of his horse in the 96th running of the Kentucky Derby stands as a testament to his exceptional talent and unwavering commitment.
Beyond the racetrack, James was a proud alumnus of Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky, institutions that helped shape his sharp intellect and unwavering spirit. He carried the values instilled by his education throughout his life, approaching every challenge with integrity and a keen strategic mind.
Don will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched within the equestrian community and beyond. His legacy as a masterful horseman and a kind, honorable man will forever be etched in the heart of Kentucky.
A gathering to celebrate Don's life will be held at the Hartland Club House (4910 Hartland Parkway, Lexington, KY) on Wednesday, June 18th, from 6 pm to 9 pm.
