James (Chief) Rayburn Cook, age 93, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Funeral service for James Cook will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Bible Baptist Church in Chickasha, OK. Interment will be at Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
James was born on March 2, 1932, in Amber, Oklahoma, the son of Samuel Lee Cook and Ella Auttonberry Cook.
James graduated from Meridian High School. He loved to play basketball. James worked at the Chickasha Fire Department, where he proudly served the Chickasha area as a firefighter, assistant Fire Chief, and Fire Marshall. He retired from the fire department after 20 years in 1987. He also worked at Farmland Co-op for 20 years in Chickasha.
James and Juanita Cochran Cook were married on December 8, 1955. They just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. James found a love of traveling the countryside with Juanita in their R.V. They also enjoyed square dancing for many years. James was baptized at College Heights Baptist Church. He loved his family deeply. He enjoyed coaching the boys in Little League Baseball, gardening and volunteering for Festival of Light. He loved watching his grands and great-grands play ball. James loved his OKC Thunder Basketball team. He enjoyed eating lunch with the retired firefighters on Thursdays at Jake’s Rib. James loved his J&W Grill, also.
James is preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Daren Cook, Brett Cook, and Gary Blake Cook; his granddaughter-in-law, Nicole Cook; his brothers and sisters, Lora Garrett, Jay Cook, Lloyd Cook, Irene Jeter, Sidney Coo,k and Carolyn McBride.
Those left to cherish James’ memory are his wife, Juanita; his daughter, Susan Cook Bogle and husband Allan Bogle; his son, Tim Cook and wife Jackie Cook; daughter-in-law, Janet Jackson Cook; grandsons, Trevor Bogle, Cody Bogle and wife Tyanne, Dustin Cook, Braden Cook and wife Breanna; granddaughters, Desi Rae Priddy and husband Ray Priddy, Maddie Cook Christian and husband Ethan; great grandkids, Lily, Ella, Hudson, Adilyn, Maverick, Quaid, Briggs, Emma, and Kenna. James is also survived by his sister, Nadine McDown, sister-in-law, Lois Cook, and many nieces and nephews, friends, and his brothers in fire and blood.
Pallbearers for the funeral service will be Dustin Cook, Trevor Bogle, Cody Bogle, Braden Cook, Ray Priddy, and Ethan Christian.
