James F. Cotugno, Jr., affectionately known as Jimmy to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on August 28, 1950, in Newark, Jimmy was a lifelong resident of New Jersey. His journey through life was one marked by deep love, joyous music, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
Jimmy met and married the love of his life, Mary, in Newark and together they built a beautiful life, moving to Belleville and later settling in Aberdeen in 1997. Their partnership was a testament to devotion, spanning 48 years of shared dreams and cherished moments. The proud father of James J. Cotugno and father-in-law to Jennifer, Jimmy's heart was further expanded by the joy brought by his two grandsons, Salvatore and Emanuel. His love for them was boundless, and he reveled in every opportunity to travel with them, share in their discoveries, and simply enjoy their presence.
In addition to being a dedicated family man, Jimmy is survived by his brother, Anthony Cotugno, and sister, Patricia Rosamelia. They, along with the rest of his family, will remember him as a beacon of courage, love, and kindness, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Professionally, Jimmy made his mark in the world of real estate sales and development. His astute business acumen and personable nature led him to a successful career, last working with US Homes/Centex. He retired following a distinguished tenure, leaving behind a trail of accomplishments and a network of colleagues who respected and admired him.
Beyond his family and career, Jimmy's passion for music was a defining aspect of his life. His love for bands like Steely Dan was more than just a hobby; it was a part of his soul. He shared his musical talents as a singer with the band Jersey Sound, touching the lives of many with his voice. At home, he had a music mixing board, a testament to his love for creating and sharing music.
Jimmy's love for the ocean was another facet of his rich life. He found solace and happiness by the beach, where the rhythm of the waves complemented the music in his heart. It was here that he reflected on the beauty of life and the blessings he had received.
As we bid farewell to James F. Cotugno, Jr., we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a journey completed with grace. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories told, the music played, and the love shared. Jimmy's spirit will continue to guide us, just as the lighthouse guides the ships at sea, reminding us of the strength and warmth of his enduring presence.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Lucy's Roman Catholic Church in Newark
