James H Cox, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and passionate writer, passed away on July 4, 2025, at the age of 85, with his beloved wife, Sharon Ann Cox, by his side.
Born on October 22, 1939, Jim dedicated his life to nurturing others through education and enriching their minds with the written word. A proud graduate of Plant City High School in Florida, Jim went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from George Peabody College (Vanderbilt) and two master’s degrees from Webster University. He spent many fulfilling years teaching marketing at Spalding University, Indiana Wesleyan University, and McKendree University. However, his true passion lay in writing itself. For over 75 years, Jim poured his heart into journalism—writing newspaper copy, crafting stories, and authoring numerous books. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity that will inspire future generations.
Jim was not only intelligent and eager to learn but also a hard worker who found immense joy in his craft. He was known for his creativity, often drawing inspiration from his extensive travels by train. Jim relished in recounting tales of his youthful adventures, including his early days delivering newspapers—memories he wove into the fabric of his writing. One of Jim’s fondest memories was spending his summers working at Camp Ridgecrest in North Carolina in his youth, returning many times throughout his life. He also loved to spend time in Florida by the ocean, frequently traveling to the Tampa Bay area. Family and faith were cornerstones of Jim’s life. As a proud member of Christ Church United Methodist for twelve years, he found a community that shared his values and supported his endeavors. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; his daughter, Robin (Gene) Alexander; his son, Jimmy (Iris) Cox; and his daughter, Jodi Reed. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Brandon, Jordan, Hannah, Caroline, David, Sophie, and Lynnsey. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Hill Cox; his father, James Everett Cox; and his granddaughter, Jessika Alexander. These losses left a mark on his heart, yet he continued to find solace in his family and in his writing. In remembering Jim, we celebrate not only his accomplishments and passions but also the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and literary excellence that will forever be cherished by his family and all who had the honor of knowing him.
