James Walter Coyne

James Walter Coyne, fondly known as Bud or The Fox, peacefully passed away at his granddaughter's home, surrounded by the love of his family, after a life rich with stories, service, laughter, and legacy. Born in Rensselaer, NY, on October 6, 1924, Jim lived through a century of change with resilience, heart, and humor.

A proud American, Jim served his country as a Gunners Mate aboard the LST-934 in the U.S. Navy during World War II and on the Darby Ship during the Korean War. After his military service, he earned his degree from St. Michael’s College and became a dedicated teacher and coach. He taught with passion and coached nearly every sport, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.

Jim was a character in every sense—his storytelling could captivate a room, and his deep, contagious belly laugh could light it up. He was passionate about health, athletics, and good food. Later in life, he discovered a love for dancing and singing, embracing every moment with joy and energy. After retiring, Jim picked up tennis and played competitively well into his 70s. His grandkids fondly remember him out on the courts, holding top rankings in the county and going toe-to-toe with “the young men”—and often winning.

If you ever met Jim, you knew his charm. He loved to flirt, loved to laugh, and always found a way to brighten someone’s day. But more than anything, Jim loved his family. His guiding principle was always family first. He adored his grandchildren and never missed a birthday or the chance to share a special treat. He was the heartbeat of the Coyne family—our leader, our anchor, and our inspiration.

Last October, Jim was surrounded by generations of family and friends as they celebrated his remarkable 100th birthday—a joyful milestone filled with love, laughter, and gratitude for the life he so fully lived.

Jim is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Virginia May (Phillips), his sons, James Coyne and Mark Coyne. He is survived by his son Brian Coyne, and grandchildren Eric, Traci, Stephanie, Kirsten, and Patrick. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Victoria, Christopher, Evan, Taylor, Cahner, James (Keeghan), Nathan, and William, and great-great-grandchildren Charlie and Teddy—each of whom carry forward his legacy of love, strength, and perseverance.

Jim lived through nearly every era of the modern world, and his advice to all of us was simple but powerful: Persevere. Love one another. Take care of yourself.

He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 11:00 AM—a fitting tribute for this true American patriot.
