James Clyde Crain, 82, of Winchester, died at 5:55 p.m., on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at his daughter's home in Danville, Indiana, with she and her husband Shawn near his side.

Jim was born on March 25, 1943, along with his twin brother Jay, in Portland, Indiana, to Clyde Crain and Nilah (Andars) Crain, all who preceded him in death. He graduated from Dunkirk High School and was later in the Army and attended watchmakers school. He was a longtime employee of Maul Technology in Winchester where he gained some of his closest friends.

Jim is survived by his daughter Debbi Austin (Shawn); stepchildren Michelle Slattery (Ted), Jeff Slattery (Julie), and Jimmy Slattery; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Sharon Crain, Mary Ann Heckley, Sharleen Heckley, Pat Jarvis, and Elaine Blair; and many nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death are wife Iantha (Heckley) Crain and wife Barbara (backmeyer) Slattery Crain.

Jim was an avid lifetime fisherman and hunter. His favorite days were spent in waders in a river with a fly rod in his hand. His nephew Jonahthan Crain took him on many adventures fly fishing and gun shopping. Jim built many guns in his lifetime, finishing one just a year and a half ago. He loved carving the stocks in beautiful masterpieces. Jim was also a Mason with the Scottish Rite.

Jim was sad to leave his Winchester home last year and a half due to his failing health. He cherished his big historic home on Main Street that he and Iantha bought and refurbished. The front porch was a frequent gathering place for many friends and family for Jim's famous Irish coffee.

Winchester Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic Service at 1 pm on Saturday July 26th at Walker Funeral Home in Winchester with a memorial service to follow. Burial will follow at Fountain Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Walker Funeral Home.

Jim touted Reid Hospital as the best hospital ever and attributed his longevity in life all to the care that he received while there many times over the years. Please send any donations to Reid Health Foundation, 1100 Reid Parkway, Richmond, IN 47374 in his memory or to Randolph County Historical Society, 416 South Merdian Street, Winchester, IN 47394
