James Ray Cuneio, 83, of
Sullivan, MO, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at Phelps Health in Rolla, MO. Born in Detroit, MI, on March 28, 1942, to William and Helen (Wilson) Cuneio, Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a warmth that touched all who knew him.
Jim spent his early years in the rural surroundings near Sullivan, where he attended various country schools, instilling in him a love for the land and its community. A proud graduate of Sullivan High School in 1959, he carried the values of hard work and perseverance into his service with the United States Air Force. His time in the military was marked by an honorable commitment to his country, which continued until his discharge in 1965.
Furthering his education was a testament to Jim's lifelong love of learning. He attended the University of Missouri, where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology. His academic journey did not end there, as he went on to graduate from UMKC School of Dentistry in 1974, a milestone that paved the way for his future endeavors.
Jim's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. He married the love of his life, Linda Beckett, on December 16, 1967. Together, they welcomed three children: David, Anne, and Amy. The family found their home in Sullivan, where Jim opened his dental practice, James R. Cuneio, DDS. He not only raised his family in Sullivan but also built a thriving practice that served the community with care and excellence.
In 1999, Jim's story came full circle as he returned to the farm where he grew up on Jakes Prairie. There, his passion for agriculture shone brightly, earning him the affectionate nickname "Pumpkin Professor." His pumpkin patch became a local legend, providing joy and smiles to many during the autumn season. Jim's love for the outdoors extended to his Black Angus cattle, which he raised with the same dedication he applied to all aspects of his life.
Upon entering retirement in 2009, Jim sold his dental practice, but his days were far from idle. He remained an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, where his Christian faith was an integral part of his life. Jim's interests were diverse and deeply rooted in his love for nature. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, relishing the time spent in the great outdoors. His adventures with Linda in their RV, especially trips to the Grand Canyon and the mouth of the Mississippi River, were among his most cherished memories.
Above all, Jim loved his family. His sense of humor, always ready with a joke, and his repository of knowledge and useful tidbits made him a beloved figure not just within his family but also among friends and acquaintances. Jim's legacy is one of love, wisdom, and humor-qualities that defined his life and will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
