James attended South Bethel School in the Connor Community and later attended Marian Anderson School in Madisonville, Texas. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Little Rock Baptist Church, also located in Madisonville, Texas.
James was a devoted truck driver, spending many years on the road driving 18-wheelers for Shultz Brothers Company and was later employed at Prairie View University as a groundskeeper.
