James Hermit Curtis, lovingly known by his family as "Ponto", was born on February 10, 1942, to the parentage of Hillard Curtis and Alber Dean (Greene) Curtis in Madisonville, Texas.

James attended South Bethel School in the Connor Community and later attended Marian Anderson School in Madisonville, Texas. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Little Rock Baptist Church, also located in Madisonville, Texas.

James was a devoted truck driver, spending many years on the road driving 18-wheelers for Shultz Brothers Company and was later employed at Prairie View University as a groundskeeper. He had a special love for barbecuing and enjoyed sharing meals and fellowship with his family and friends while tapping his feet to Lee Williams.

He was united in marriage to Annie (McDade) Curtis. Although no children were born to this union, he faithfully embraced his stepchildren, Wanda Jackson and Rebecca Blackmon.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Hillard and Alber Dean Curtis; his wife Annie Curtis; and two brothers, Melvin and Felix Curtis.

Left to cherish his memory are his stepchildren, Wanda Jackson and Rebecca Blackmon; two loving sisters, Ruby Merchant and Mary Curtis, both of Madisonville, Texas; aunt, Thedora Greene of Madisonville, Texas; fifteen nieces and nephews whom he adored; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.

A funeral service for James Curtis will be held in the chapel of the Madisonville Funeral Home on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 11 A.M. followed by burial in the Southside Cemetery in Midway, Texas. Reverend Danny Baker, of Little Rock Baptist Church, will officiate the service, and Pastor Tony Green will serve as the Eulogist. Visitation will take place prior to the service starting at 9 A.M.
