It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James C. Deuel, affectionately known as "Deuely," who left this world on January 31, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on August 19, 1956, James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose impact on those around him will be felt for generations to come.
James was predeceased by his beloved parents, Nancy and Clifford Deuel, and his youngest daughter, Stephanie Deuel. He is survived by his loving wife, Lana Deuel, who stood steadfast by his side through thick and thin, his sister in law Lee Byrne and her family, his brothers and their partners David and Carrie Deuel, Paul Deuel and Lisa Lotti, and his cherished daughters and their spouses Danielle Deuel and Nathan Merrill, Amy and Michael Knochenmus, along with their mother, Denise Jenkins. He was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren—Kaydance, Deagan, Allison, June, and Grace—and a beloved uncle to his niece Jennifer and nephews Michael and Joshua Deuel, whose families he adored.
Growing up in Oxford, NY, James graduated high school before finding his home in Norwich, NY, where he became a long-standing member of the American Legion. It was here that he truly put down roots and began to build a life with his family.
James's professional journey took him through various roles at Sherburne Auto, Norwich Furniture, and Parts Plus, each leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of those who had the pleasure of meeting him. His easy-going demeanor and quick sense of humor drew people in, making him a cherished presence in his community.
A true lover of sports, James found joy in golf and softball, where he earned the playful moniker of "Darth Vader" for his skills in unlimited arc play. An unbeatable dart and pool player, he claimed victory in nearly every bar game, inspiring camaraderie and friendly competition among friends.
James also treasured camping trips with his family, excursions to Florida to visit his brothers, and riding his Harleys. He had a knack for building intricate models of muscle cars and was a lifelong weightlifter. In every endeavor, he approached life wholeheartedly as himself. He was such a genuine person and made everyone he met feel like a lifelong friend.
His kindness, humor, and unwavering strength will be missed by everyone who had the fortune to know him. James leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will resonate through the lives he touched.
Calling hours will be held in his honor on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 1:00PM-3:00PM at Behe Funeral Home Inc. 21 Main Street, Oxford, NY 13830. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Legion Post #376, 17 S. Washington Ave. Oxford, NY 13830, or the Oxford Emergency Squad PO. Box 172 Oxford, NY 13830, in James's name.
