James Carlton “Son” Doss, 85, of Appomattox passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Hogan Doss.
Born in Appomattox County on February 29, 1940, he was the son of the late Bernard Doss and Daisy Nell Doss. Son was a lifelong member of Bible Baptist Church and served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He loved golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was a faithful servant of the Lord who helped anyone in need.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Timothy Allen Doss and wife, Sherry, and Sandra Doss Brown and husband, Steven; seven grandchildren, Mary Nicole Saelens, Tiffany Marie Applewhite, Fallone Brown, Timothy Doss, Jr., Jessica Doss, Steven Brown, Jr., and Heather Marie Riggleman; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Shirley Ferguson; son-in-law, Mason Riggleman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Teresa Lynn Riggleman; and brothers and sisters, David Doss, Jane Doss, and Gordon Doss, Charles “Dude” Doss, Samuel Doss, Jr., Patricia Davidson, Lucy Gagneur, Peggy Ayers, and Helen Burnette.
A funeral service will be held 11am, Monday, November 24, 2025, at Bible Baptist Church with Pastor Jonathan Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Old Herman Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
