James Doss Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Memorial Park, and Crematory on Dec. 10, 2025.
James U. Doss, age 95, of Tuscaloosa, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025, at Hospice of West Alabama. A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Crosspointe Tuscaloosa Church (4109 University Blvd. E., Tuscaloosa, AL, 35404). Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Freddy Williams and Pastor Caleb Strickland officiating. Graveside interment services will follow at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
Mr. Doss was born November 16, 1930, in West Jefferson, AL to the late William Doss and Verna Doss Olive. He grew up in the mining town of Praco. He met the love of his life "Winnie" (Winifred Watson) and they married September 15, 1955. The two were married for over 70 years. He was a dedicated family man and loved his family dearly! He enjoyed family vacations in the mountains and any time spent together as a family. Being a Daddy and PawPaw were his greatest joy! He spent his free time tinkering with old cars and building things for his grandkids – who loved their PawPaw!
James was a devout Christian; he loved the Lord with his whole heart! Together, James and Winnie, have been members of CrossPointe Church of the Nazarene in Tuscaloosa, since 1968. He served as a board member for many years. He was very active in church activities for as long as his health permitted, and he deeply loved his extended church family immensely!
Mr. Doss was preceded in death by his father William Doss, mother Verna Olive, step-father Floyd Olive, mother and father-in-law Amos and Vista Watson and son-in-law Mike Henson.
He is survived by his wife Winifred Doss, daughters June Strickland (Dale) and Margie Henson Colburn (Phillip), grandchildren Matthew Strickland (Cindy), Daniel Strickland (Sara), Brittani Moore (Matt), Caleb Strickland (Katie) and Anna Lang (Thomas) as well as his beloved great-grandchildren Dylan, Benjamin, Peyton, Mason, Madi Ryan, Abbi, Emma, Walker, Jack, Lucy, Eli, Nora and Amelia.
Serving as Active Pallbearers will be Matthew Strickland, Daniel Strickland, Thomas Lang, Matthew Moore, Dyland Strickland and Benjamin Thomas. The Doss Family wishes to recognize the members of CrossPointe Church, neighbors of 5th Street, Time Frye, Danny and Anita Spencer and Marcus McGee with USPS as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, in Mr. Doss' honor, may be made to Hospice of West Alabama or CrossPointe Church Missions.
