James Robert Evans, 61, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Born on August 23, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Virginia Gruchot Evans.
James was a loving and understandable son, who cherished the close bond that he shared with his mother, brother and wife. Affectionately known as "Slim Jim" growing up, everyone knew that he seemed to never gain a pound.
He was a proud U.S. Navy retiree, a devoted family man, and an avid dart player. James was also a NASCAR enthusiast and enjoyed spending his time watching and supporting his grandchildren in their sports and club activities.
Jim always made everyone feel at home when they came to visit him. He was deeply proud of his family and loved nothing more than to spend time with them. Whether sharing stories from his Navy days or cheering on his favorite driver, Jim's warmth and wit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
His steady presence, sharp sense of humor and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. If you knew Jim, chances are he turned you into a NASCAR fan. He was endlessly supportive of his children's choices and took great pride in calling them his own.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Mary-Ellen Julia Evans.
James is survived by his daughter, Sarah Stansell; son, Paul Evans (Kim Bluhm); mother, Virginia Evans; grandchildren: Conner Dykes, Brantley Evans, William Evans, and Ashlyn Stansell.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church, 510 St James Ave, Goose Creek, SC 29445. The burial will be held 10:00 AM on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St, Beaufort, SC 29902.
