James E. Gallagher, of Stevens Point, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at King Veteran's Home in King, WI, at the age of 77.

James was born March 2, 1948, in La Crosse, WI; son of the late Edward A. and Frances (Sands) Gallagher. He grew up in the area where he attended local schools and graduated from Logan High School.

Following graduation, James proudly enlisted in the US Army where he served in the AUS Armor Division. During the Vietnam era, he was stationed in Germany where he assisted in guarding the Berlin Wall. Following his military service, James began his career in the rail transportation industry, starting with Milwaukee Road in La Crosse, WI. He worked there for several years until the company's closing. He then went on to work for Heileman's Brewery until he accepted another railroad position with Wisconsin Central Railroad, in Stevens Point. James then moved to Stevens Point and dedicated the remainder of his career to WCR as a Roundhouse Foreman.

James was a loyal husband and father who treasured time with his wife and children, and eventually his grandchildren. His helpful, friendly demeanor gained him countless friends in life, whom he enjoyed spending time with. He especially looked forward to his weekly coffee get-togethers with Bruce Blanchar and Dave Gervais. Upon retirement, James also looked forward to monthly railroad breakfasts with former co-workers, who became friends.

James had a passion for working with his hands, whether it was repairing cars or crafting projects in his shop. He also loved the excitement of a good Bingo game or trying his luck with daily scratch-offs. While he may not have won big at the South Side BP with those scratch-offs, he did win big in making more friends. In fact, he could often be found there, enjoying friendly conversations with staff and customers! James was always on the hunt for a bargain and could not pass up a local rummage sale. In the evenings, James enjoyed relaxing with a puzzle and often swapped completed puzzles with his neighbor in a friendly exchange.

James is survived by his children, Lynn (Lucas) Hopfensperger and Jeffrey (Amanda) Gallagher; and his grandchildren, Brody and Hadley Hopfensperger, Michael Janowski, and Makenzi, Lindsey, and Jessica Gallagher.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; a son, James Jacobson; his parents, Edward and Frances; a brother, Tom Peterson; and a sister, Kathleen Gallagher.

Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse, WI, at a later date.

Shuda Funeral Chapel is honored to be assisting the family.
