It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Orville Gilbert, age 34, who left this world on July 19, 2025, at the University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, IA, after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born on June 21, 1991, in Grinnell, IA, James lived a life full of passion, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends.

James was a beloved husband to his wife, Erika Gilbert, and a devoted father to their cherished daughter, Elana Gilbert. He is survived by his parents, Orville Gilbert (and stepmother Sara) and Angela Bellinger (and stepfather Greg), along with his sisters Ashley, Adisyn, Mariah, and Madilyn. He leaves behind a wide circle of family, including numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss his infectious spirit and generous heart.

James was preceded in death by his beloved fur baby, Zoey, and his grandparents: Orville Gilbert, Nadine Gilbert, and Robert Jordan. He also mourns the loss of uncles Doug Jordan, Jimmie (Billie) Gilbert, and James Jordan, as well as his great aunt Lois (Annie) Jordan, and cousins Linda Reel, Jayson Gilbert, and Torrence (T) Sumerlin.

James attended South Tama County Schools, where his extroverted nature began to shine. He made friends wherever he went and was known for his hard work and willingness to help others. As a jack of all trades, James had a passion for working on cars, tinting windows, and was especially fond of street racing and drag racing, often thrilling friends with burnouts and impressive speed.

James's adventurous spirit was reflected in his love for the outdoors, particularly playing outside with his daughter, Elana, and embarking on memorable family vacations, including a favorite trip to Bear Country in South Dakota. His family meant everything to him, and he was devoted to creating lasting memories with them.

In the workplace, James was known for his dedication, having spent his days driving semi-trucks and forging connections with those he met on the road. He brought joy and laughter to every encounter, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

His life, though too brief, was a beautiful tapestry of love, adventure, and commitment to family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, especially in the laughter of his daughter, Elana, and in the memories shared with his beloved wife, Erika.

A private funeral service will be held to honor James's life and spirit, as his family takes this time to grieve and celebrate the impact he had on so many. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to organizations that support research for pulmonary diseases, a cause that was close to James's heart.

James Orville Gilbert will forever be remembered for his hardworking nature, his adventurous spirit, and his boundless love for his family and friends. His memory will remain a guiding light in their lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
