James Gordon Graves Sr., affectionately known as “Jimmy,” passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the age of 60, surrounded by his family at Wills Memorial Hospital.
Jimmy was born on September 16, 1965, in Asheville, North Carolina. In his later years, he made his home in Washington, Georgia, where he was surrounded by the love of family and friends.
A dedicated and hardworking man, Jimmy spent many years as a truck driver for Lucky’s Tomatoes in Sylva, North Carolina. He took great pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic and commitment.
Outside of his career, Jimmy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, building model cars, and riding his Harley. His passion for tattoos was well known, and one of his most special qualities was his remarkable ability to remember everyone’s birthdays—a reflection of his thoughtful and caring heart.
In his final chapter, Jimmy found peace in his faith, having recently given his life to the Lord. This brought him comfort and serenity in his final days.
Jimmy leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory always: his children, Amanda Owenby of Waynesville, North Carolina; Jamie Bryson of Canton, North Carolina; James G. Graves Jr. and his wife, Cassie, of Washington, Georgia; and Adrienne Graves of Tignall, Georgia. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Steven Rice of Seffner, Florida, and Levi Rice of Asheville, North Carolina.
He will be dearly missed by his brother, J.C. Graves of Candler, North Carolina, and his sister, Susan Graves of Asheville, North Carolina. Jimmy was a proud grandfather to 20 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one great-grandchild. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former spouses, Wanda Reece and Gayle Barker, who shared in many years of his life.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Ethel Graves, and his sister, Jackie Graves.
A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 2:00 PM at New Life Baptist Church, with Reverend Arthur Key officiating.
