John William Thackston, age 72, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia.
John dedicated his life to serving his country as an instructor for the Patriot Missile System with the United States Army. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class after 20 years of service. He dedicated the rest of his life towards mentoring his children and preparing them for life’s challenges.
He is survived by his loving children: Yamemah Thackston-White and her husband, Shane White, of Baltimore, Maryland; Gregory Thackston and his wife, Odaliz Thackston, of Sugar Land, Texas; and Faith Thackston and her husband, Justin Robert Smith, of Frostburg, Maryland. He also leaves behind a sister, a brother, several nieces and nephews, and nine cherished grandchildren, Marah, Milah, Jariel, Alana, Ezra, Buddy, Aurora, Annie and Luca. He also leaves behind his loyal canine companions, Donnie and Zoey, who were always by his side bringing him comfort and joy.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Dale Ivan Thackston and Charlotte Cato Thackston and his beloved best friend Chubs Angus Thackston.
John loved movies, off-roading, camping, and creating lasting memories with his children, grandchildren and dogs. John was an extremely simple and straight forward man that did not stand out in a crowd. Luckily, everyone who knew him will remember his kindness and that beard-bordered smile, reserved for human-kind, machines, mother nature, survivalism, coffee, donuts and a good horror film. Behind that smile was a man of exemplary character and unique compassion.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate John’s life will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Hopkins Funeral Home. Family and friends will gather to pay their respects and share memories of a life well lived.
Rest in Peace Daddy, we love you!
