James Eads Groseclose of San Marcos, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 19, 2025, at the age of 89.
Jim was born on March 21, 1936, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the second of four children to Herman and Ottoma Groseclose. He was raised in Oklahoma City, where he became a standout quarterback for Classen High School, graduating in 1954. His exceptional talent earned him spots on the All-City, Mid-State, and State Football Teams, leading to a scholarship to play football at Tulane University in New Orleans.
On August 28, 1955, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Arline Hendricks. They shared a remarkable 69 years of marriage before Arline preceded him in death just four months ago. Jim also spent three years studying at the University of Oklahoma's School of Architecture and remained a devoted Sooner football fan throughout his life.
Jim's career in construction began with significant projects, including work on the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins football stadiums. He returned to Oklahoma City, building custom homes before spending his later years as an inspector for a commercial architectural firm, working until he was 72.
Beyond his professional life, Jim cherished his connections, especially the Classen High School Class of 1954 Alumni Group, enjoying their reunions and quarterly get-togethers until his move to San Marcos in 2024. He remained sharp and engaged, playing Words with Friends and Chess on his iPad until his final months.
Jim was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He blessed everyone he met with his kindness and wonderful sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arline Groseclose; his parents; and his brother, Joe Groseclose.
Jim is survived by his sisters, Phoebe Spencer of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Abbigail Schmesser of Shallotte, North Carolina; his daughters and son-in-law, Robyn and Jim Austin of San Marcos, Texas, and Cindy Vann of The Woodlands, Texas. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Lauren Vann of Austin, Texas; Daniel and Jennifer Vann of Montgomery, Texas; Aaron Austin and Lea Klumpp of Austin, Texas; Ashley and Chris Millar of San Marcos, Texas; and Amber and Clayton Lowell of Godley, Texas; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A family celebration of life will be set at a future date.
