Jim and I traveled globally together often in our respective operational and strategic marketing roles at The Coca-Cola Company. Perhaps our most memorable trip was to Africa, which include a weekend layover in Cape Town, South Africa. Our host, Doug Jackson, drove us around the Cape in a VW bus eventually arriving late in the day in the parking lot adjoining the scenic overlook of the Cape of Good Hope.

However, before we exited our VW bus, Doug warned us that wild apes would probably surround us as soon as our feet hit the ground. We were advised to hold our ground. stand tall, and do NOT reach into your pockets as the apes will think you were going to feed them. Doug reassured us that if we "were cool", the apes would quickly lose interest and move along.

True to form, Jim and I followed Doug's instructions and the apes (many of them four feet tall with rather large teeth) had surrounded us for about three or four minutes when suddenly their attention went to the far end of the parking lot. A young Japanese couple (likely on their honeymoon) had just driven into the parking lot in their BMW convertible with the top down and opened the trunk to remove their picnic basket. No doubt this unknowing couple were planning for a romantic sunset with wine and cheese at the Cape. Unfortunately, the leader of the pack of apes jumped into the trunk of their car and grabbed their picnic hamper. Off went the biggest ape with the spoils of his conquest with all the smaller apes racing behind.

Jim and I relived this "war story" on many occasions, and we shared many more "adventures" like this one across the years in the World of Coke. Jim's friendship, camaraderie, professionalism, and leadership made our work so much more meaningful and downright fun. I will miss my good friend; God Bless his Soul and may he rest in Peace.

Charley and I offer our sympathy and support to Paula and family. Jim and I worked together while we were both with the JTL (Lupton) Coca-Cola bottling organization. Jim was always a key contributor. I valued his counsel and leadership. Charley and I appreciated Jim and Paula's friendship. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to his family. Jim was my first manager when I went to the SWA back in the late 70's. He was a great manager and mentor. We had a lot of windshield time in South Texas in those days calling on Bottlers. He was a generous person. I learned a lot from him - both in business and in life.
