James Harold Hawkins (PeeWee), 74, of Duncan passed away on Tuesday, May 2. Born in Wellford, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Patrick Harry and Martha Gill Hawkins and the husband of Susan Brockman Hawkins, his high school sweetheart, for 53 years.
PeeWee is survived by his only child, Amanda Hawkins Edwards and her husband Neel of Duncan. His one grandchild, Neel Patrick, was his greatest joy. He had one sister, Patti Hawkins Robison and her husband Sammy, one sister-in-law, Carlene Brockman Sheriff and her husband Allen, and one brother-in-law, Barry Brockman and his wife Beth.
PeeWee was a 1968 graduate of James F. Byrnes High School and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. He worked for Erwin Distribution and Spartan Mills in purchasing and was Supervisor of the Trucking Division. He retired from Spartanburg District 5 schools where he was the Transportation Director for 27 years.
He was an Eagle Scout, Hejaz Shriner, and a fifty year member of Irvin Southworth Lodge 350 and Jackson Lodge #383. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church and an Associate member of Lyman United Methodist Church.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 6, at Sharon United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00pm in the church prior to the service. The celebration of life service, conducted by the Reverend Gryff Carosiello and Reverend Larry Lawson, will begin at 3:30pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.
From 1963-1965, PeeWee spent time in the Shriners Hospital in Greenville due to severe scoliosis. Since it was a place dear to his heart, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, Georgia. Please notate for the Greenville Hospital.
Pallbearers will be Roland McAbee, Jeff Rogers, Fred Coan, Ron Simmons, Tony Gillespie, Lane Fowler, Billy Young, and Danny Vaughn.
