In Loving Memory of James Paul Hight
Facing the death of someone is one of life’s most difficult experiences. It is hard to grasp that you have had your last visit, your last conversation, your last meal, and your last holiday with your loved one. Yet, even in the darkest of moments, you can find clear signs of God’s presence and love.
“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1st Thessalonians 5:18). This does not mean that we will always be thankful for what for we are going through, but it does mean that we can be thankful for what God is giving us to sustain us in our grief.
James Paul Hight, age 93, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on April 15, 2025. Born and raised in Brownsville, Tennessee, Jimmy was a proud graduate of Haywood High School, where he met the love of his life, Eva Jane. The story is told that he wished her a “merry” Christmas, and she thought he said “marry” Christmas, and they were married on December 25, 1952.
Jimmy began his career farming the family land before serving in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his military service, he and Jane made their home in Memphis, where he worked as a manufacturer’s representative in hardware, toys, and furniture for more than four decades, where he was recognized for his resilience, patriotism, and unwavering work ethic.
Jimmy was a dedicated member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for 67 years. He greeted newcomers with warmth and served faithfully as president of the Fidelis Sunday School class.
A lover of the outdoors, Jimmy spent his early years enjoying lake life, skiing, and camping. In later years, he became a skilled gardener whose home was always adorned with blooms. He loved watching Westerns and gospel music on YouTube and was a devoted sports fan, cheering for the Memphis Grizzlies, UT Football, and especially the teams of his grandsons and great-grandsons.
Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Paula Hill (Jeff); grandsons Nathan Hill (Laura) and Jordan Hill (Ashley); five beloved great-grandchildren - James, Cooper, Jack, Knox, and Piper. He also leaves behind his sister, Betty Jones, other loved family members, and his two best friends whom he considered family - Henry Blanks and Shannon Pitner.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Jane Hight; his parents Tom and Stella Hight; his brothers, John Hight, and Lloyd Hight; and his sister, Hazel Buffaloe.
A private burial will take place in Brownsville, Tennessee, with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4459 Willow Road, Memphis, TN 38117. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
