James Hollmann, 68, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in Roswell, New Mexico. Please take a moment and share a kind thought or memory with James' family at www.andersonbethany.com.
There will be a viewing at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a rosary to begin at 6:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at Assumption Catholic Church on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery.
On May 3, 1956, James was born to Francis Charles and Marie Miraldi Hollmann in Schenectady, New York. He attended the University of Maryland and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Upon graduation, he worked at the Annapolis Police Department, and then he worked at the United States Department of State Bureau of Diplomatic Security, in the firearms and explosives unit, as an instructor and SWAT team member. While working for the Untied States Department of State, they took his picture for a shooting target and that is when the infamous Izzy target was born. Prior to retirement in 2016, he worked at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and held many positions, such as the Senior Firearms Instructor teaching the BIA and Mixed Police programs, before retiring as the Branch Chief in Firearms and General Training. James was a School Board Member for the Hagerman School District and even volunteered as a reserve police office for the Hagerman Police Department. He had many hobbies in life that brought him joy like shooting, riding horses, hunting, SASS Mouted Shooting, acting (and actually starred in a few small roles in movies!) and even dabbled in sailing in his early life. He loved to tell stories of the many unique things that he had experienced in his life.
Those left to eternally treasure and cherish memories of James are his children, Tim (wife, Vanessa) and his daughter Kathy; eight grandchildren; brother, Bill Hollmann; sister, Maryellen Hollmann Hollis Russell, and beloved pet, Fury.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Francis Charles and Marie Miraldi Hollmann; and his son, Pitak Hollmann.
James' tribute was written in his honor by his family.

I am very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I met Jim in 1987 when I was a student at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and Jim was one of our firearms instructors for our Diplomatic Security Basic Agent class. Jim was incredibly patient and very skilled as an instructor, working with me and helping a guy who had never fired a revolver before coming to training in steamy Southern Georgia. Jim later became famous for Firearms Chief Bill Penn using his likeness forever saved as the "Izzy" target used by Diplomatic Security and later the world. In shooting circles, Jim may have been the most famous man not known because of this shooting target. Rest well Jim and thanks for teaching me how to shoot well. I will never forget you are your time spent with our class. Mike Wilkins, retired Diplomatic Security Agent, Basic Agent Class 33 (1987).
