James J. Hyland, fondly known as Jim, departed on September 30, 2024, in Hilton Head, SC, at 90. Born in New York City on December 27, 1933, Jim's life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his community and faith. Jim's infectious humor and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He treasured his senior years at The Cypress, where he formed lasting friendships and shared many joyful moments. Jim's unwavering faith was a guiding light in his life. As a devout St. Francis Catholic Church member in Hilton Head, he channeled his beliefs into extensive charitable work. His deep involvement in local community services, including the Pregnancy Center, the St. Francis Thrift Store, and Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica, was a testament to his commitment to his faith and his generous spirit. Jim sent numerous shipping containers of used furniture from the HHI Time Share communities to Jamaica for the orphanages. These fundraising efforts were made possible through the support of his fellow St. Francis parishioners.Jim's service in the United States Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Captain, was a shining example of his leadership and unwavering commitment to service. His proud veteran status is a testament to his dedication and sacrifice for his country. His career spanned significant roles professionally, but his military service, a significant part of his life, is a reminder of the sacrifices made by few for the freedom we enjoy.Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol, and his second wife, Diane. He is survived by his daughter, Cara; his son, Mark; and his siblings, Catherine Hannigan, Anne Cooke, and Michael Hyland. Jim will always be grateful to Diane's children, John Boyle and Julie Mecca, for their love and support after Diane's passing. In his final notes, Jim wanted to remember his special friends, Barbara and Tom O'Rourke.Jim, a passionate golfer and tennis player, found joy and relaxation on the courts and links. His love for sports was not just a hobby but a reflection of his vibrant spirit and zest for life. His education journey, which began at Resurrection Ascension School in Elmhurst, Long Island, continued at Xavier High School in New York City, and culminated at Holy Cross College, Class of 1955, was a testament to his commitment to learning and personal growth. These aspects of his life, his love for sports and his dedication to education, are a part of his legacy that many can relate to.In place of flowers, contributions in Jim's memory can be made to Mustard Seed Communities, an organization he passionately supported. (29 Janes Ave. Medfield, MA 02052) A funeral service will be held in his honor at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday, November 7, at 10:00 AM. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from those who knew and loved Jim. Your presence at the service to celebrate his life and legacy would mean much to Jim's family and is a testament to his impact on us all.

Jim, a stickler for correct spelling, once 'corrected' a Navy medical form's listing of diseases, noting the item's proper spelling was 'sniffles'.

Jim was someone who always saw the best in people and brightened everyone´s day with his smile and kiss on the cheek & squeeze of their hand.

Jimmy was a devout Catholic and every Wednesday he would, as a volunteer, visit us inpatients at The Preston Health Center- Jim so enjoyed sharing stories about his education at Holy Cross in MA, the adventures in FL with his late wife and updates on his 2 sons. After chats he always blessed me and faithfully encouraged hope for a full recovery and again being home with my treasured husband. What a special man he was and Jim will always be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
