James Johnston Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home & Crematory on Feb. 20, 2026.
James Hubert Johnston, 82, of Crestview, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026. He was born on May 29, 1943, in Mammoth, West Virginia, the son of late James H. and Rhoda Stockwell Johnston.

James served five honorable years in the United States Air Force, as a teletype technician while stationed in Spain. Where he met his loving wife of many years, Maria. A cherished memory he loved recounting.

After his five years of military service, he followed his father's footsteps. He enjoyed a long and respected career as an aircraft mechanic. First with Eastern Airlines and later with UPS, where his precision and dedication ensured countless safe flights.

Beyond his career and service, James found great joy in life's simpler pleasures. He was an avid Miami Dolphins fan, cheering passionately for his team through every season, victory, and defeat-often gathering the family around the TV to share in the excitement.

He also cherished family game nights, where laughter filled the room as he played board games and cards with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will last for generations.

In his workshop, James was a talented woodworker, crafting beautiful pieces with patience and skill-whether turning elegant pens on the lathe or building charming birdhouses, each project brought him quiet satisfaction and often became thoughtful gifts for loved ones.

James will be remembered for his strength, unwavering loyalty to family and country, his love of a good game (on the field or at home), and the warmth he brought to every gathering.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Rosemary; sister Ruth Linger; Leona Cundiff; and brother Joseph Ellison.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, James is also survived by his wife Maria and his three sons: James Johnston (wife Wendy), Thomas Johnston (wife Patricia), and William Johnston (wife Kori); his grandchildren Kelly Soucy (husband Adam), Kimberly Dreaden (husband Cody), Mikaela Clark (husband Corey), Zachary Johnston, Caitlin Johnston, and Wyatt Johnston; and his great-grandchildren Conner Soucy, Hannah Soucy, Peter Dreaden, and Thomas James Dreaden. Sister Iris Brisendine; brothers Michael, Ray, and Gay Johnston.

Rest in peace, James. Your legacy lives on in the love you gave so freely.
